“Here Comes The Sun”, 21 July 2018. These 3 panels acrylic on canvas (90cm x 90cm approx.) derived its title from the experience of painting these pieces during the live painting with music improvisation on the first day of Opposites Abstract IMMERSE Art Exhibition.
That was my first time painting live in front of the public, with live music playing in the background as well. Some asked me, “what are you going to paint?”, “what colours will you use?”, “how are you going to do this?”… My answers to those questions were simply, “I don’t know”. 😊 Nothing was pre-planned about this painting. I was contemplating on whether to use the shades of blue, purple or turquoise. In fact, I painted my toe nails blue the day before and wore purple on that Saturday. 😂
That’s the best about live painting with music improvisation as well, I feel. It is all about spontaneity, being present, living in the moment and having fun while at it too! The only guidance that I hold dear to my heart was the theme of this exhibition – IMMERSE. That’s they key, for me – to be immersed in the music and everything else surrounding me while creating my art piece.
I felt at peace and free when I painted this. I felt at peace and energised listening to the live music. I felt the music touched my heart and soul, vibrating through every single cells of my body, and my hands moved along with those vibrations to create this art piece.
During break, I was chit chatting with one of the musicians, Tada from Bugs Band, and he said he saw the sun in my painting while he was singing, and the verse “Here Comes The Sun” came to him. He sang that. That verse was sung while the music played. That verse was sung while I painted this. That was a good sign, I feel.
I then continued to paint and create this art piece, continued to feel free and at peace while imagining the sun shining around me, signifying light, hope and love – the sun shines every single morning with ease, coz that’s what the sun does. That’s the nature of the sun – to give light. It gives light to the moon at night, it gives light when the rain stops and the dark clouds are swept away. This painting is a reminder of that – that the sun shines – whether we see it or not – all the time.
